Sustainable U.S.
Peanuts Initiative Looking for Farmer Volunteers
|
|
|
Peanut
growers are now able to access the Sustainable U.S. Peanuts initiative platform.
The program, run by the American Peanut Council (APC), will use data voluntarily
supplied by peanut growers who want to tell their sustainability story and
benefit from program learnings. Growers can register for the platform now
at www.sustainableuspeanuts.org.
The first
phase of the initiative, the grower platform, is actively recruiting growers to
input data for their 2021 peanut crop. The goal is to have 30 or more
growers enroll in the program and complete their 2021 crop information by April
30, 2022. Using the data supplied, the program hopes to not only tell a
consumer-facing sustainability story centered on peanuts but also help growers
drive farm improvement and profitability. Additionally, this initiative will
produce tools to help our industry communicate findings to consumers,
governments, trading partners and other stakeholders.
Resources
are available on the website to better explain the program and help answer any
questions. To see what the platform looks like, a step-by-step guide for how to
enroll is on the resources section
of the website. Additionally, a recent APC ‘Growing Together’ webinar provided an excellent overview of why
this initiative is important to the peanut supply chain, benefits to each
segment, the key elements of the program, and how it is being rolled out. The
content was created in partnership with the National Peanut Board and their PR
partner Golin.

Celebrating
National Peanut Month with a Snack Attack
|
|
|
Each year the
National Peanut Board creates consumer activations to drive consideration of
peanuts and peanut butter. In 2022, we are turning the gen wars into gen love
by showing how everything can be better together with peanut butter through
three interwoven campaigns spread throughout the year. To keep the conversation
alive in between, NPB’s PR agency Golin researched relevant moments in time to
engage with media and influencers. The first such moment was in March for
National Peanut Month.
Since peanuts are
a popular snack, the National Peanut Board commissioned a survey to learn more
about the snacking habits of our target audience. The data collected was
released to media in celebration of National Peanut Month and included not only
a traditional press document, but bite-sized digital friendly infographics for
use on popular social media platforms.
The poll of 2,000 Americans between the ages of 18 and 41
(1,125 Gen Zers and 875 millennials), dug deep into why participants snack,
what they are looking for in a snack, and even their definition of a snack,
which if you are curious is namely that it can be eaten on-the-go (37%).
Interestingly, one-third of respondents call peanuts a meal while 51% believe
them to be a snack. Media are always hungry for statistics, and they ate this
story up with digital outlets across the US and the globe sharing the
information.
National Peanut Month may be over, but our team continues
to use the data points from the poll with media and influencers and plans to
include not-yet-released stats during the final consumer activation in the
fall. See more findings from the poll we conducted here.

Butters, Daniell Bliss, in front of NPB’s booth.
|
|
After a
two-year hiatus due to the pandemic, more than 2,700 exhibitors returned to the
Anaheim Convention Center for the Natural Product Expo West trade show in
March. Natural Products Expo West is the leading trade show in the natural,
organic, and healthy products industry bringing together retailers, buyers,
investors, and media to learn about new brands and products.
The
National Peanut Board (NPB) exhibited at the show with four brands: Bamba
showcased their well-known peanut butter puffs; Bliss Nut Butters highlighted
four unique peanut butters; Chingonas Salsa Macha provided small tastings of
their oil-based chili crunch sauce using peanuts; and Pasokin featured
Brazilian-style Peanut Butter Bites, PB Crumbs Topping and PB Powder.
“Expo West
is all about innovation,” said Carlotta Mast, senior vice president and market
leader at Informa Markets’ New Hope Network, which produces the Natural
Products Expo tradeshows. “We’re seeing unique ingredients, new formats and
formulations… helping consumers meet very specific health and wellness needs.”
This
year’s showroom floor was filled with innovative products. The overarching
ingredient themes included plant-based, vegan, organic, high in protein and
ethnic flavors. As a healthy, nutrient-dense, plant-based food option, peanuts
have a place in each of these trends.

Recipe: Colombian
Peanut Hot Sauce
|
|
|
Spice
seems to be everywhere these days, so NPB wanted to share this trend with a
Colombian peanut hot sauce. This hot sauce is perfectly paired with empanadas
de pipián. It’s also a great way to try out NPB’s consumer activation, the
nutty neutralizer. Capsaicin is the chemical compound that makes spicy foods spicy.
It is found in chili peppers, with the highest concentration in the seeds. When
capsaicin is eaten, the molecule binds to receptors on your tongue that detect
temperature changes and pain, causing you to feel the familiar “burn.” As a
hydrophobic, fat-soluble compound, capsaicin makes food spicy and dissolves in
fat and oil, not water. That’s why milk is a well-known option for
counteracting spice, but peanut butter is another staple that can be just as
effective. And the Nutty Neutralizer is a lactose-free, plant-based and
shelf-stable antidote to calming the heat. Bring a small jar anywhere to pull
out during a spice crisis.
