The National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) has issued a “Request for Applications” for its 2022 competitive grants program, which includes a research topic submitted by the National Peanut Board (NPB). The program provides dollar-for-dollar matching funding for organizations like NPB. The research community is encouraged to submit applications by the deadline on July 14, 2022, at 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time.

The title of the approved topic is: Characterize natural and induced genetic variation across the diversity of cultivated peanut germplasm using innovative genetic technologies to provide a resource base for peanut genetic improvement focused on traits for biotic and abiotic stress resistance, quality, productivity and other beneficial traits.

Projects covering this commodity board topic must not exceed $500,000 total per project for research projects (including indirect costs) for project periods of three to five years. The NPB representative, DeMarquine' Houston, can be reached at (678) 424-5757 or dchouston@nationalpeanutboard.org

Applicants must state in the last sentence of their application’s Project Summary section that the proposal is submitted in response to the specific NPB topic listed above.

Additionally, applicants seeking funding through the NPB co-funded topic must provide a letter of co-funding support from the National Peanut Board directly to the NIFA Program Contact. This letter of co-funding support must be received within 60 calendar days of the July 14 application deadline.

To receive a letter of co-funding support, applicants must submit their entire application to the NPB contact and request a letter that specifically indicates that NPB supports the application for co-funding. For further questions, please contact the NPB representative listed above.

Through the AFRI co-funding program, NPB has leveraged matching funding of $2,795,724 versus a contribution of its own and industry funds of $1,471,500.

The National Peanut Board (NPB) has once again teamed up with The18, a leading soccer media brand, to celebrate teamwork. Working off of the joint campaign centered around peanut butter being the official sponsor of teamwork, NPB and The18 challenged viewers to try to beat former and current U.S. Men’s National Soccer Team players, Landon Donovan and Jordan Morris, in a peanut juggling challenge.

The peanut juggling challenge opened April 9, 2022, and submissions were accepted through May 9. The posts announcing the challenge received over 1.7 million impressions.

In the first five months of our campaign with The18, we’ve received 14.6 million total content impressions and 3.7 million engagements on NPB sponsored posts.

NPB Returns to In-Person International Peanut Forum

After meeting virtually in 2021, the International Peanut Forum was back in person in Budapest, Hungary for 2022. National Peanut Board president and CEO Bob Parker, CMO Ryan Lepicier and former chairman Peter Froese were all in attendance. Over 240 delegates from 33 countries were also in attendance.

Lepicier moderated the peanut supply panel session, where peanut supplying countries spoke the latest on plantings, regulatory environment, input costs, supply chain challenges and other issues impacting the production and delivery of peanuts. Panelists consisted of representatives from Argentina, Brazil, China, India, Nicaragua and the U.S. Parker was the representative for the U.S.

“Going to some place like Budapest was amazing but what made it even better was to see the whole industry together after two years,” Froese said. “The American Peanut Council put together a beautiful two-day event and the speakers they had this year were excellent. We even had the opportunity to tour the city and sure enough found peanuts in the grocery stores that ranged from in-shell, packaged and lots in between. As a producer, it was fascinating to see what it takes for our products to get into the hands of our European consumers, and it felt great to see other countries enjoy our U.S.-grown peanuts.”

https://campaign-image.com/zohocampaigns/506140000012638004_zc_v93_1607355393843_douglas_942x550.jpg

This chipotle honey roasted peanut recipe came from Ed Engoron, owner of Perspectives. According to Engoron, these were created after a favorite version of this snack was no longer available on his flights. Refusing to give up his favorite airplane snack, he went to his test kitchen and created this recipe for spicy honey roasted peanuts. Get the full recipe here.
