Peanut Congress Highlights the Metaverse and Women in Peanut Leadership

At the meeting of the USA Peanut Congress in Charleston, SC earlier this month, the National Peanut Board (NPB) was involved in two “firsts.” During the General Session, Ian Abrams, executive vice president of Golin, presented the future of consumer marketing in the metaverse. The metaverse is an immersive, online, virtual reality world to facilitate connection in all aspects of our lives, from playing games with friends to cooking dinner with a chef. Still in its infancy, the metaverse is far from being a large part of consumers’ lives, but it’s posed for growth and marketers are paying attention to the metaverse’s potential to build community, expand reach, personalize experiences and more.

Back in the real world, Peanut Congress was also the site of the first gathering of the Women in Peanut Leadership (WPL) group. Founded by Marianne Catalano, executive director of Virginia Carolinas Peanut Promotions, and Shelly Nutt, executive director of Texas Peanut Producers Board, WPL’s goal is to promote and unite women within the peanut industry. NPB sponsored WPL’s lunch and tour of the Charleston Harbor which welcomed more than 40 attendees.

“NPB has a long history of women in leadership and is proud to support this industry effort to increase women’s opportunities and success in peanuts,” said Lauren Highfill Williams, director of communications at NPB.

Peanut Industry Explores South Korean Market

National Peanut Board (NPB) President and CEO Bob Parker and Arkansas Board Member Greg Baltz traveled to Seoul, Korea for the Seoul Food show from June 7 – June 10. Seoul Food is an international exhibition for food, beverages, hotels, restaurants and food services. The event, which featured +1,600 exhibitors with 40+ countries represented, provides an opportunity for businesses to display their products and establish network contacts with potential buyers and businesses from around the world.

The Texas Peanut Producers Association and the American Peanut Council exhibited at the show. Parker, Baltz, Texas and APC met with officials with agricultural trade experts from the U.S. Embassy in Seoul; met officials from the Korean Peanut Importers Association; and toured retail outlets to get a better understanding of how Koreans consume peanuts. The group learned that the tariff for raw peanuts from the U.S.A. will phase out completely in 2026.

“This gives us a few years to establish relationships with Korean importers and help U.S. suppliers of raw peanuts make connections," Parker said. "The Korean market seems most interested in shelled high oleic Virginia peanuts. We also learned that there is currently no tariff on roasted or processed U.S. peanuts, giving us an immediate opportunity.”

NPB Showcases Sustainable USA-Grown Peanuts at Menus of Change

The National Peanut Board (NPB) recently showcased sustainable USA-grown peanuts at the Culinary Institute of America’s Menus of Change leadership summit. More than 300 experts in foodservice, health science, and social change presented and discussed topics relevant to what today’s health- and environmentally conscious consumers expect from corporations, foodservice operators, and business leaders.

“Leadership summits like Menus of Change allow NPB to showcase the nutritional and sustainability benefits of peanuts to influential foodservice operators and business leaders who are looking for innovative ways to improve their menus to meet changing consumer preferences,” said NPB chief marketing officer, Ryan Lepicier.

When it comes to food choices and sustainability, carbon emissions ranked most important to conference attendees according to a custom poll conducted by the Culinary Institute of America on behalf of NPB. Soil conservation, land use efficiency and water use efficiency ranked second, third and fourth respectively.

Datassential presented its 3rd annual Plant-Forward Opportunity Report at the summit. Among the many interesting findings was that more than half of consumers say they are concerned about climate change and that a majority make the connection between food choices and environmental impact. While concerns about taste and affordability of plant-based food persists, more consumers show interest in trying dishes with mixed animal and plant proteins.

Attendees got to try several peanut menu items during meals and networking breaks. A favorite was the Mexican Coffee Style Popped Amaranth Peanut Butter Cups. Other menu items included Chicken Peanut Mole and Peanut Salsa Macha on Seared Cauliflower.

NPB Highlights Peanuts at Specialty Food Show

https://campaign-image.com/zohocampaigns/506140000012981004_zc_v51_1607354201233_marketingsummit_942x550.jpg
Earlier this month, the National Peanut Board (NPB) attended the 2022 Summer Fancy Foods Show in NYC to see the latest food trends and flavor profiles for the year. It was the first Summer Fancy Foods Show hosted since the COVID-19 pandemic hiatus with over 180,000 products presented. Specialty food remains one of the fastest-growing segments of the food business and there were a variety of products featured like specialty cheeses, artisan hot sauces, organic chips and gourmet peanut butter.

Visitors to the NPB booth were introduced to several notable peanut products, including flavor-packed peanuts from Hubs — a multi-generational peanut farming family who sell gourmet peanuts grown in Virginia. Also featured at the booth were LuRay boiled peanuts, who brought this southern roadside staple to NYC. There was also Noomi, an organic artisan peanut butter sweetened from dates, as one of the newest peanut butter options. Mission MightyMe represented the growing new market of peanut puff snacks targeted towards children for early introduction to prevent peanut allergies. One other specific innovation of peanut products includes Virginia Gold Coffee, the first coffee-alternative that is 100% made from peanuts.

Summer Fancy Foods Show also offers trend reports and education components in addition to the exhibitor halls. One of the 2022 Specialty Food Association Trendspotter Panel Trend Predictions was the growing market of plant-based comfort food. Peanuts can be at the forefront of this growing trend for years to come.

“As we head into a second year of the COVID-19 pandemic, comfort is an overriding theme,” said Denise Purcell, vice president of content and education for the Specialty Food Association. “The events of the past 18 months have consumers seeking out familiar and comforting foods and beverages, but often with a twist for some excitement, or with specific diets and health concerns in mind.”

Some notable and trending peanut snack products from the show included:
  • Chingonas – A salsa macha blend made with peanuts from a husband and wife duo out of their restaurant Otra in California.
  • BNutty – A gourmet peanut butter brand with a variety of flavors made by two soccer moms in Indiana wanting to provide better snack options for their children.
  • Hot Monkey Nuts – A flavorful spicy peanut snacks brand that features 9 different flavors focused on bringing you the heat.
  • Jessie’s Nutty Cups – Small, peanut butter and chocolate cups. These are handcrafted and come in 8 different flavor variations.
