Spreading the Early Introduction Message
|
|
|
By Sherry Coleman Collins, MS, RDN, LD National Peanut Board (NPB) continues to spread the message
of the early introduction of peanut foods to help prevent peanut allergies to
physicians and other healthcare providers through targeted virtual and
in-person events. To change behavior and increase adoption of this preventative
behavior, reversing decades of contrary habits, it’s essential for healthcare
providers to lead the discussions with consumers. Our goal is to equip these
folks with the tools they need to drive adoption of the newest guidelines on
prevention.
Nurse Practitioners (NP) see hundreds of thousands of
patients a year and are a valuable part of the healthcare team. In the family
and pediatric setting, they can provide education for families on a variety of
topics, including infant feeding. NPB continued to expand its outreach to this
group by attending the Florida Nurse Practitioner Network (FNPN) in Orlando in
August. Having face-to-face conversations with these providers and giving them
handouts, introducing PreventPeanutAllergies.org, and delivering important key
talking points helps them provider better care to their patients.
About 50% of babies in the U.S. participate in the Women
Infant and Children program (WIC), which provides essential nutrition
assistance for our most vulnerable population. It is the perfect place for
parents to hear about the importance of prevention. NPB participated in the
National WIC Association’s biannual Nutrition Education and Breastfeeding
Promotion earlier this month. Attendees were enthusiastic about
peanut-containing foods. Most were familiar with the early introduction advice,
even mentioning NPB resources such as sponsored webinar, but some still had
questions and were grateful for practical information on how to help their
clients safely introduce peanut foods.
The research is clear that the early introduction of
peanut-containing foods in infancy helps prevents peanut allergies. NPB
continues provide vital education and outreach to help prevent peanut allergies
among Americans.

The Peanut Podcast Episode 11: Peanuts in Humanitarian
Aid
|
|
|
Peanuts and peanut butter have always been a pantry staple
in American homes. But what about their use after natural disasters or helping
people? Peanut butter is used for more than just a tasty snack – it has become
a vital component in nutritional global relief and humanitarian aid. This
shelf-stable and nutrient packed food can be used anywhere from areas decimated
by hurricanes all the way to children suffering from chronic malnutrition. For
the one-year anniversary episode of the Peanut Podcast, we’ve covered how the
peanut industry uses and donates peanuts to those in need.
Dr. Mark Manary, founder and CEO of Project Peanut Butter,
has dedicated his career to improving child health in Sub-Saharan Africa.
Project Peanut Butter started in 2004 after Mark discovered the ease and power
of peanut-based ready-to-use therapeutic foods, or RUTF. He knew there was a
need for a food that wouldn’t spoil in tropical climates, didn’t need special
refrigeration or preparation, was enriched with proteins and good fats, and
wouldn’t be at risk for contamination. Instantly, Mark knew that peanut butter
could be the answer.
“Why don't we take peanut butter and add things to it?” said
Mark. “And let's try that as a therapy for malnutrition and treat children…And
bear in mind, the children I'm talking about are severely malnourished
children, children who are facing a more than 50% chance of dying within three
months if they're not treated.”

How Peanuts Can Help Athletes Level Up Their Performance
|
|
|
By: Stevie Smith MS, RDN, CSSD, CDN
It’s no secret that an athlete's approach to nutrition can
help enhance their athletic performance, post-workout recovery, and overall
health. While each individual will have different nutrition needs, having a
balanced diet that provides adequate energy, macronutrients, and micronutrients
should be prioritized to support their activity.
Peanuts have more than 30 vitamins and minerals, 7 grams of
protein per ounce, more than any other nut, for lasting energy, and contain
good fats which is important for heart health. Scientific evidence suggests but
does not prove that eating 1.5 ounces per day of most nuts, including peanuts,
as part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol may reduce the risk of
heart disease. Peanuts and peanut butter are excellent choices for athletes to
include to fuel their active lifestyle. Just simply adding a scoop or two of
peanut butter to my oatmeal every morning not only helps me meet my nutrition
needs as an athlete, business owner and dog mom — it's a tasty and satisfying
way to start my busy days.
