While the official comment period for the WIC Food Package
updates has passed, that doesn’t mean the conversation has ended. There remains
significant interest and concern in the medical and WIC communities focused on
preventing peanut allergies by ensuring access to peanut-containing foods and
appropriate education for early introduction. The National Peanut Board (NPB) team
continues to be part of these conversations.
NPB participated in the National WIC Association National
Policy Conference, which brings together local WIC staff, advocates and experts
around emerging and pressing issues. This year’s event focused on changes to
the WIC food packages, rethinking infant feeding in light of the recent baby
formula challenges and innovations in how participants can access and use their
benefits. Being part of the conference gives NPB a more in-depth understanding
of what it takes to deliver quality nutrition services to families at risk and
ensure peanut foods are part of the solution.
The NPB Food Allergy Education Advisory Council met at the
end of February. This group of national and international leaders in food
allergies, research, advocacy and schools gathered to discuss the latest work
from their organizations as well as hot topics. The group discussed NPB’s work
to educate stakeholders and USDA about the deficiency in the proposed WIC food
package related to peanut allergy prevention and members shared their own work
as well. The group confidently endorsed continuing to work together toward
peanut allergy solutions.
American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (AAAAI)
annual conference occurred after the Advisory Council met in San Antonio. This
year’s conference included many education sessions about food allergies,
including a number of sessions about preventing peanut allergies. During each
session about prevention, the lack of inclusion of peanut-containing foods in
the infant package was mentioned and discussed. In fact, during Monday’s
plenary session about food allergies, Ruchi Gupta, MD, MPH specifically
highlighted the work of NPB in raising awareness about this issue. Dr. Gupta
has been a stalwart supporter of access to peanut foods as a way to help
prevent peanut allergies and will host the Global Food Allergy Prevention
Summit 2023.
There continues to be broad support for the inclusion of
peanut-containing foods for infants in the WIC food package. Although public
comments have closed, individuals can continue to learn more about this issue, click here.

Staff at the National Peanut Board have been traveling
across the South to attend grower meetings including the Georgia Peanut Farm
Show, South Carolina Annual Peanut Growers Meeting, Alabama-Florida Trade Show,
Mississippi Peanut Growers Annual Meeting, National Peanut Buying Points
Association Winter Conference, Florida Peanut Producers Annual Meeting and
Virginia Peanut Growers Annual Meeting.
While in attendance, staff presented updates from the Board.
These updates featured results from our “Peanut Better Together” campaign,
which received over 80.9 impressions spread out across the three activations:
the Nutty
Neutralizer, PB
Your Space and our PB Chili
Cook Off.
NPB also shared peanut allergy updates including the
exciting news of peanuts returning to schools In Lee County, Florida. While
this news was first announced at the Southern Peanut Growers conference in
July, NPB shared resources they have to help other schools with this transition,
including PeanutsinSchools.org.
Finally, NPB shared production research updates. In its 20+
year history, the National Peanut Board has invested and secured more than $45
million in production research funding, through budgeted allocations and
industry matching funds. Future areas of research may include exploring
increased production and usage of peanut
oil. NPB also informed farmers of our commitment to supporting diversity.
We believe diversity is critical for future growth. Support of the Peanut
Leadership Academy is one way we're working to include underrepresented farmers
- sponsoring two PLA members per class.

Dig Into School Breakfast This Week
|
|
|
This week, the nation celebrates National School Breakfast
Week from March 6-10, 2023. National School Breakfast Week is celebrated during
the first week of March to highlight the importance of a nutritious school
breakfast to fuel students for success. The theme for this year is “Dig In to
School Breakfast.”
The School Breakfast Program, which started as a pilot
program in 1966 and was later granted permanent authorization in 1975, has
grown into a program that helps schools provide nearly 14 million breakfasts
daily to students across the country in over 90,000 schools. This program not
only helps students meet their nutritional needs but eating school breakfast
can help with students’ academic success.
When it comes to building nutritious breakfast options,
peanuts are an easy choice. Peanuts provide 7 grams of protein, fiber, mostly
good fats and essential vitamins and minerals to support growing kids.
Peanuts and peanut butter can be enjoyed at breakfast in
many ways! Schools around the country currently use products like Smuckers
Uncrustables to bring peanuts to the menu and help students fuel up for the
day. Other menu items like smoothies, breakfast bars, and parfaits can be
elevated with the addition of peanut butter for students to enjoy.
For school nutrition professionals who make peanutty
breakfast foods from scratch, we at the National Peanut Board (NPB) have you
covered!
Across the country, schools will be recognizing National
School Breakfast Week with fun menu items and activities. Celebrate National
School Breakfast Week with these amazing peanut-filled recipes that students
will dig.

(NPB) President & CEO Bob Parker, Texas A&M researcher Dr. John Cason
and Executive Director of the Georgia Peanut Commission (GPC) Don Koehler. Read
